The Three Golden Rules of Water-Cooled Flat-Six Longevity

Warm Up the Oil, Not the Coolant:

Coolant temp reaches 175°F in 3 minutes; engine oil and block aluminum require 15–20 minutes of moderate driving (<3,000 RPM) to achieve operating clearances.

Never "Lug" Cold Engines:

Full throttle at 2,000 RPM produces maximum combustion thrust side-loading when the hydrodynamic oil wedge is weakest and bore clearance is lowest.

High HTHS Viscosity (Porsche 5W-50):

Porsche Classic now recommends 5W-50 for M96/M97 engines to maintain oil film shear strength under high operating temperatures.
